Choosing A North Carolina Health Insurance Plan

Because every individual has their own unique health care requirements, there is no one health insurance plan that can be deemed best. Situations vary from one person to the other and from one family to the other. Health insurance plans that may be perfect for one individual’s situation may not be right for another. There are several different health insurance plans in North Carolina, each one of them designed to meet different needs.

Here are some of the important factors to consider when choosing a North Carolina health insurance plan for you or your family:

Annual Deductible – Health insurance plans do not necessarily cover you from the first medical expense. Annual deductible is the annual amount you will have to pay towards medical expenses before your insurance comes into effect. Annual deductible can vary from one plan to the other and it is important to weigh this against the other benefits the plan offers.

Choice of doctors and hospital – If you have any preferences by way of doctors or hospitals it is important to ensure that they are included in the health plan’s network. If not, does the health insurance plan have a fairly large network of doctors and hospitals to choose from?

Prescription benefit- Prescription drug benefits are not always included in the healthcare plan. Often, even if coverage is included, you would often need to pay a certain amount per prescription depending on if the drug is a brand drug, preferred drug or generic drug. Determine your current and estimated future requirements and costs and see if the plan offers you value.

Lifetime Maximum Coverage – This is the total sum that the health insurance will pay out towards your medical expenses over your lifetime. Typically, this amount ranges between $1 million to $5 million. Choosing a health insurance plan with a higher coverage amount could be beneficial in the long run as it would offset escalating medical expenses.

Premium – This is the monthly amount you are required to pay for your policy. Policies that have lower premiums may have higher deductible policies, which means you will have to pay more from your own pocket before the healthcare plans takes effect.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), Celtic Ins. Co. and WellPath Select, Inc. are just a few of the many health insurance companies in North Carolina.
