Cancer Care For Younger Patients

stupid cancerA new website has recently joined the Internet stratosphere and it is already generating a lot of buzz. In fact, Time Magazine named it one of the 50 best websites of 2007!

A new version of My Space? Nope. Music sharing? Wrong again. Would you believe it is a website focused solely on the subject of cancer? And not just cancer – but cancer for those under the age of 40!

It’s subject matter isn’t pleasant, but that is exactly why the website, www.imtooyoungforthis.org , fills such a need. The sites creator, Matthew Zachary, is a pianist, brain cancer survivor and founder of Steps for Living, a nonprofit advocacy group.

The site provides links to and information about support organizations, scholarships and other financial aid opportunities, social networks, summer camps, weekend spa retreats, fertility education, peer counseling—the kinds of support services you don’t typically hear about from a doctor.

It’s no wonder that the website is so popular when you learn that there are over 1 million people in our country under the age of 40 with a cancer diagnosis.
Because the vast majority of cancer patients are over 40, this group often goes unnoticed and under-supported. Until now, it has been hard for these patients to find resources for discussing issues like relationships, marriage, college and fertility.

Compounding the cancer diagnosis for people this age are some concerning statistics. While long-term cancer survival rates have improved greatly for children — 75 percent now survive treatment and live through adulthood – adolescents and young adult patients ages 15-21 do not show these same improved outcomes.
