Preventative Health Care Self Neglect – A Widespread Problem?

Are you avoiding going to the doctor? I personally know three people who are so I imagine that this is a widespread problem.

One of the people I know that is avoiding visiting the doctor has terrible pains that she fears may be due to her liver, but won’t go to the doctor because she is afraid they will put her on dialysis.

In the past, this same person refused to go to the doctor over other pains and ended up in the emergency room where they found that her pancreas was no longer functioning and that she had developed type I diabetes.

Another person I know that is 45 years old has not had a mammogram or a pap in 7 years and has told me for 2 years that she really needs to make an appointment for one, but never has.

Yet another has problems with unusual stomach bloating and has never gotten around to getting it checked out. Even after watching a Discovery Health “Mystery Diagnosis” episode where a woman had all of the same symptoms which turned out to be a life threatening, but easily treatable problem, she still hasn’t made an appointment.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Are you avoiding going to the doctor for preventative care or in response to unusual symptoms?

This is our one and only life we are dealing with. We owe it to ourselves to take care of our bodies – it is the only one we’ve got.

Preventative care can help you to address potential problems before they become a threat to your health. Being healthy can also significantly reduce health insurance costs. 1. It is very hard to get myself or my kids to the doc these days! We don’t have insurance (it got way too expensive) and just walking in the door is enough, but, then there are always more charges…tests, xrays, meds…. It is so hard. I’m so tempted to pack up and head for Canada!
