Biking For Exercise
One of the best ways of getting fit and staying that way is to develop a habit of biking. This is a great way of toning up muscles, shedding pounds, and giving your body plenty of fresh air – this is especially important if you are working all week and your usual supply of air is supplied through some form of air conditioning system.
Biking is something that you can do at any level of fitness because you go at your own pace. There’s no-one trying to make you go faster or further, but you will find that over time, your pace and your stamina increase and you’ll be able to cover more distance without feeling out of breath.
At first biking may seem tiring because you’ll be using muscles that aren’t usually worked. If being outdoors is something new to you, this may also increase your level of tiredness initially. But after a couple of rides you’ll feel that your body accepts the increase in muscle activity, and the tiredness will fade to a better nightly sleeping pattern.
Other than the cost of the bicycle, there are few costs associated with biking, so it’s a good form of exercise for anyone on a budget. You can usually pick up a cheap second hand bike through the small ads in the newspaper if you can’t afford to purchase a new one. The biking tracks are free, so all you need is a small puncture kit for emergencies, and lights as required by law if you’ll be cycling at night (plus a water bottle you can fill if you’re biking in the heat and where you’ll need to replenish your water supply), and that’s it. Of course there are a lot of accessories to tempt you once you become more of a cycling enthusiast, but these aren’t necessary to your cycling hobby.
One of the best things about biking as a form of exercise is that it’s something that the whole family can take part in. With obesity becoming such a problem amongst children due to the largely inactive lifestyle that they live, getting your family moving on a weekly bike ride could be a way of sharing quality time together, as well as keeping everyone fit and healthy.
