The Truth About Food - Does Sugar REALLY Make Kids Hyperactive?

Does sugar make kids hyperactiveYes – too much sugar is not good for the waistline – but does it really make kids hyperactive?

According the “new” BBC series that is now showing on Discovery Health, sugar doesn’t make kids hyperactive. Instead, their experiment concluded that hyperactivity is based more on the environment rather than sugar.

What do you think? Is this just a theory that we’ve come to adopt that skews our perception of how our kids act after they eat sugar?

One my friends has a child that she is sure and that I am sure truly is affected by sugar! In her opinion, sugar is like a drug for her child and causes her to be completely out of control. She has another child that didn’t really ever display these same characteristics.

My personal observation is that my kids are hyper pretty much all of the time – whether they eat sugar or not. I haven’t noticed any particular changes in them after eating sugar than before.

What is your opinion?

Does sugar make all kids hyperactive, only some kids hyperactive, or is this just an old wives tale?

  1. I think most parents can testify that sugar does indeed affect our children’s behavior. I recently did an interview with a well known nutrition expert and she told me about a study of school children.

Teachers were asked to rate their behavior each day over a period of time. On days when the children were given sugar (which was unknown to the teachers) the children were 300 times worse in their behavior.

I personally don’t need a study to tell me this. I have five kids of my own. I can always tell if they have had someting sugary without my knowledge.

  2. i do believe that sugar or any sort of sugar makes any child jump off the couch. if you look at sugar is the only substance will easily lose it nutrition in the body. for kids their bodies would get rid of that little energy the sugar in less than 2 min. so could you give child a lollipop and they could play for the whole night and they are more physcal than adults.

  3. I believe that sugar does not make children hyper. I have six children 5 boys and 1 girl. When they have sugar there is no difference in their behavior. Most parents would rather have an excuse to why their children behave the way they do than put the blam where it belongs. I have been in the child care field for over 12 years and have seen many parents make excuses for their childrens behavior. I can agree that sugar is not good for the body but does change the way we act.
