The Truth About Food – How to Get Kids to Like Vegetables

How to get kids to eat vegatablesYou may have seen the new show on Discovery Health called The Truth about Food… If you haven’t you’ve got to check it out! At first I wondered how interesting this show could be and then found myself completely intrigued for the entire hour each time I watched!

In they show, they do some really unique food related experiments that offer up some very interesting results

One that really caught my attention was in an episode called “How to Feed Your Kids.” The did an experiment based on the hypothesis that if you could get your kids to eat a small amount of a certain vegetable they hated at least 10 times, that they would begin to acquire a taste for it. They gave one very obstinate young man who absolutely hated avocado a small piece every day.

At first, he was revolted by the taste, but after 10 days of trying a small piece, he said that it was “ok.” Give it a few more tries and he might actually learn to like it! This is great advice for parents who are frustrated to the point of giving up trying to get their kids eat something healthy.

I have one child that will eat just about anything without a problem and one who hates everything. It’s much easier to just give up on trying to get her to like anything healthy and I haven’t been doing the greatest job of enforcing eating vegetables on a regular basis. But after watching this, I know what to do:

  • Serve the same vegetable every day for at 10 days
  • Have her eat just a small amount of the vegetable rather than fighting with her about eating the entire serving

I’ll keep you posted on the results of my own personal experiment!
