Consideration Point #1

Some sites allow you to enter all of your personal health history information and then recommend plans for you. This is nice, but are you sure you are choosing the right plan? A plan may look good online, but is it missing critical coverage that you may not be aware of?

Consideration Point #2

When you are presented with a list of plans, you may be seeing higher prices. For example, when I did a search for my 2 kids and I, I found plans ranging from around $550 - $900. However, when I called an Blue Cross Blue Shield agent directly, she told me that I could drastically reduce my costs by getting separate plans for myself and each of the 2 kids. Doing it this way, my total cost for all three of us total $340 – more than $200 less than what I was quoted online by a brokerage website.

Consideration Point #3

If you do choose to work with an independent agency rather than getting a quote online from a broker, you’ll probably be asked to fill out a contact form. Some websites that ask you for to fill out your contact information are actually lead brokers. By filling out the form, you could be setting yourself up for dozens of phone calls from dozens of health insurance brokers and agents that your lead was sold to. While some may find this attractive, others would rather not have to deal with countless calls from health insurance agents.

To avoid this, look the websites of individual health insurance providers. For example, when you fill out the contact form on IBD’s website, you are sending your information ONLY to IBD which means you’ll receive one call from one agent who will review your needs and find a plan to fit you.
