5 Foods to Help You Sleep Better
The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late.-Charles Caleb Colton-
It is no secret that Americans don’t get nearly enough sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep is something that most Americans struggle with. Most of us are so busy working that we don’t have or make the time to relax and enjoy ourselves otherwise. This problem also seems to affect working mothers especially hard. According to one article published by the Sleep Aid Center, certain foods can help us to sleep better. ABC11 also published an interesting story about how certain foods can help us to sleep better.
For instance, eating starchy foods such as bananas, baked potatoes or cereal is ok before bed time as long as you eat them at least 4 hours before you plan on laying down. All of these foods are rich in carbohydrates, which can raise serotonin (that chemical that makes you feel relaxed). Additionally, combining high carb foods with low protein snacks tends to encourage the production of tryptophan in the brain, which helps to release more serotonin.
It is NOT advised that you eat foods which are spicy because not only will they give you heartburn, but they will give you insomnia. You should also avoid sweets and decaf coffee because both are stimulants that will keep you awake.
